Half 'n' Half - Sunday 10th of October, 2010

This Sunday outing was planned as purely a hike, but we ended up running about 75% of the distance I think. I'm now about 5 weeks away from the Oxfam Trailwalker, so every last ounce of training helps.

All-in-all in was quite a good hike/run. It would have been better as a full run with the mostly flat trail seeming ideal for it.

It's hard to put into words how much fun the 1km wet, muddy downhill dash was. Plenty of things to dodge, plants whipping us as we sped by, I had a huge goofy grin plastered on my face the whole time. In fact, without this section, I'd probably rate the whole hike/run mediocre and "okay".

There's something that feels distinctly different running along a trail with a group of like minded people compared to running with a mate along streets / urban areas. Hard to describe, sort of tribal, like a wolf pack.

A Spin Around the Old Block - Thursday 7th of October, 2010

I was originally planning to run yesterday, but woke up in the morning with quite sore legs, thus, the run was delayed until today!

It's been a while since I last went out for a run with speed in mind, so I decided to run the entirely paved, "Down-and-around-Hang-Hau" route.

A 10km with a pretty serious climb in it.

The run went very well. I can't say that I was too impressed with the final time / average speed, but I felt like I was on the accelerator the whole run, not coasting along. I suppose that's the main thing. Hopefully the pace will return as I attempt more fast runs.

See you on the roads!

Beating about the bush - Tuesday 5th of October, 2010

The weather looked good, I was feeling fit, my trail shoes were ready... It was time for another jaunt along the Sai Kung coastal-trail.

When I left UST, it was already raining a little, so instead of taking the stairs to the beach and then running the (probably) overgrown path, I decided to head down a path that I'd ran up the first time I went exploring down there.

Careening down the hill. This trail would be quite nice if it wasn't so steep!

5/10/2010 Jungle Trail Run
Flattening out as we head for the coastline.

5/10/2010 Jungle Trail Run
Government Land. No occupation, dumping or excavation.... Running through seems fine!

5/10/2010 Jungle Trail Run
Grrr... Waist to chest high grass again. Almost impossible to run through and now wet thanks to the light rain.

5/10/2010 Jungle Trail Run
Red tags, painted branches and stakes indicate the correct path!

5/10/2010 Jungle Trail Run
A less blurry panorama of the stream crossing, as promised. I didn't stop to find yabbies this time!

5/10/2010 Jungle Trail Run
Through the village, along the coastline, towards the hill...

5/10/2010 Jungle Trail Run
The Andriod app "My Tracks" doing quite a good job here. My Nexus One is inside an iSeal waterproof case. The case works great, and you still have full use of the screen when it's inside, calls are perfect to hear, but my voice gets a bit muffled.

5/10/2010 Jungle Trail Run
Flowers beside the road on the gruelling climb back up to UST.

Overall quite a tough run and quite a slow time. I couldn't run at full speed down the hill due to the super rocky trail and steep decent, nor could I while moving through the tall grass and finally, the uphill battle was so steep to reduce me to walking in parts.

5/10/2010 Jungle Trail Run

This route certainly is interesting, but I wouldn't say it's a particularly good running route. However, it's always nice to run (where possible) in new and beautiful places, so I don't want to complain too much!

See you on the trails,

Tour of Old Kowloon - Sunday 3rd of October, 2010

On Sunday, after a lazy Saturday, I felt ready for another beating so wanted to tackle a couple of running ideas / challenges I've had for a while.

The first was a tour of Old Kowloon. For those that don't know the history of Hong Kong, the British used to own Hong Kong Island and a fair chunk of the Kowloon Peninsula, right up to the aptly named Boundary Street, which basically marks the north end of Mong Kok now. Eventually, I guess the British were feeling generous, and the signed a deal to change their ownership of this land into a lease from the Chinese Government for 99 years and in return, Hong Kong was about tripled in size (by memory).

Long story, short, I wanted to cover the circumference of what was essentially "Old Kowloon", from Hung Hom, up to, and along, Boundary St, out to the western edge of the harbour and down the coastline, around TST back to Hung Hom.

The second goal was a large hill that I'd spotted in a park. Every morning, the staff bus route I take to work travels along Boundary St and past a park that plays host to a naturally forested rather impressive hill. So I thought, I'd like to at least go check it out to see if there's a good vantage point on top or something.

3/10/2010 Road Run
I started out late in the afternoon to avoid the heat. The sun's already getting low here as I pass the Kowloon City Ferry Pier.

3/10/2010 Road Run
Golden light filtering through the branches.

I rambled along Boundary St, eventually making it to the park. I found a small trail heading up the hill which consisted of stairs that zig-zagged backwards and forwards, looking like they were constructed of old shelves and other random bits of wood. Pretty standard for a HK trail really. And at the top I found.... nothing

3/10/2010 Road Run
A patch of grass and a few trees. Not even a good view to be found from the top of the hill!

Heading down the hill I found a proper looking set of stairs that neatly deposited me onto a back-road. But which damn back-road was this?! In the confusion of trying to find my way back to Boundary St, I pressed the "compass" button on my watch to follow a south heading, but... oh, no! The compass button reset my stopwatch as I didn't cycle back to the main screen first. Doh! Ah, well... I guess it was about 45mins so far... at least I found my way back to Boundary St!

3/10/2010 Road Run
After the end of Boundary St, I headed south, through a park and over a bridge crossing the train lines.

This lead me to a road alongside the harbour that I thought would deliver me to the West Kowloon Harbourfront Promenade.

3/10/2010 Road Run
Puddles along the south bound road.

3/10/2010 Road Run
Eventually leading to... a dead-end and some path leading to a cargo area??

I ran back up the street a little till I passed a family walking south along the road and stopped to talk to a couple of HK teenagers sporting huge cameras. They too were planning to head to the park, but this was their first time in this neighbourhood as well! A local worker set all three of us straight: just head straight through the cargo area!

3/10/2010 Road Run
Deserted. The sun had long disappeared and the light was quickly fading.

3/10/2010 Road Run
Apologies for the grim image, but my mind kept remembering the Batman paperback title: "A lonely place of dying".

Eventually, after a few dead-ends I (thankfully) found my way into the Waterfront Promenade. Plenty of bikes, families and photographers here!

3/10/2010 Road Run
A large concrete circle just designed for cyclists to ride around and relax on.

The run was wearing on a bit, but from here, it's a well worn path down to TST and back around to Hung Hom.

3/10/2010 Road Run
The Mid-Autumn Festival displays at TST all lit up.

Well, I would consider this successfully ticking both the to-do's on this run and I think with a little course smoothing, this could be quite a nice 19-20km run.

3/10/2010 Road Run
3/10/2010 Road Run

What a great weekend, with 20km+ runs on both Friday and Sunday. Can't wait for the cooler weather to arrive and let me push it out to more serious distances!

See you in Old Kowloon!

The Trail Half - Friday the 1st of October

As many of you know, I'm taking part in this year's Oxfam Trailwalker Hong Kong. It's a gruelling 100km along Hong Kong's MacLehose Trail. With our 4-person team already formed we've been going out to walk the trail in sections, so far covering 3-8.

Last Friday was a public holiday, so I took advantage of this to head out with my (new) brother-in-law, Ar-Wai, to run the last two sections (9 & 10) of the Mac trail. Sections 9 & 10 are relatively flat and about 21km long.

1/10/2010 Trail Run
At the start of the trail.

I carried a backpack the run, but had over-packed, taking along most of my "hiking" gear instead of paring it down. I had: spare clothes and a towel (I was expecting heavy rain necessitating a change afterwards), 4 slices of pizza (I didn't eat anything on the 2.5hr run), 3L of water (turned out to be about the right quantity), Medkit and other "essentials" (including a knife, toilet paper, etc) and some spare compression gear (Zoot calf sleeves). In retrospect, just the water and a phone would have been ideal.

1/10/2010 Trail Run
Wai heading down a hill on the first section (9) along a road.

1/10/2010 Trail Run
Posing at the mid-way point, the Tai Lam Chung Reservoir.

1/10/2010 Trail Run
After the mid-point, the trail followed a path along the north shore of the reservoir, initially, corralled by a bamboo grove.

1/10/2010 Trail Run
The reservoir-side trail.

1/10/2010 Trail Run
Gaining a bit of elevation.

The trail then left the shore, pushed up a steep hill and wound through some rolling hills before a mild decent to the finish. All-up it took us around 2hrs 40mins, which was a fair bit longer than expected. Aside from a brief ~5min walk up the steep hill, we were jogging the whole time at what felt like a comfortable but not slow pace. This makes me think that the ~20-21km suggested may be a bit out, but perhaps running with the pack was slowing me down more than I noticed?

route
elevation
As you can tell from the elevation graph, this sections starts quite high... all the hard work is in the section before!

It's a great trail to run and we did pass a few other runners out there. I'm looking forward to taking it on again!

See you on the trails

On the road again - Wednesday 29th of September, 2010

After taking a week and a half off for my wedding, I was back on the road again. Since it had been a while, I decided to run a familiar, not too hard route: from UST out to the Shell near Fei Ngo Shan and back to UST.

29/9/2010 Road Run
I spotted this tiny guy, right in the middle of the footpath. He's about 1-2cm long but thanks to Macro focusing on my W90 he looks huuuge!

29/9/2010 Road Run
Heading down the hill to the village. Conditions couldn't be better for this time of year.

29/9/2010 Road Run
Abandoned home.

29/9/2010 Road Run
This dog eyed me careful and as soon as I was heading away, was more than happy to bark at me. When I stopped and turn to take a photo, he quickly escaped through the lichenous fence!

29/9/2010 Road Run
Heading down the big hill back towards HKUST.

The run wasn't easy after having not run for so long, but it wasn't exactly hard either. Great conditions have made me a little more optimistic about picking up a little speed this winter.

See you out on the trails!
